LAO FAMILY

Here's my most recent work commissioned by one of my cousins, Hubert Lao. I haven't done three heads before for a commission so this is definitely a first. The original picture had all of them looking at the viewer. I thought it would be nice to make them look at each other instead. That suggestion proved to be challenging using only one reference but i am satisfied with the outcome!

GATITA

I’m amazed at how she recognized herself in the portrait at such a young age and her reaction to it. It makes what I do truly worth it, the revision, the time spent to be part of a surprise to make someone’s day just a little bit brighter...http://www.broderickwong.com/works-in-progress/

GRUB-A-DUB-DUB

Well lookie here. A green grub chomping at some dry moss. I wonder if it tastes like moss too. — at Lynn canyon.

YIN YANG

I got one of these cool Yin Yang bracelets. The old lady ran through her spiel about using only dead animals for the leather and bone to make these before giving me my change. That's good to know. — at Lynn canyon.

MR. ORGANOGOLD: BERNIE CHUA

Here's what kept me up all night over the weekend! Although I didn't see his reaction, he smiled and then laughed at me for no apparent reason, which tells me he either liked it or he thought I looked funny. I was also introduced to his Grampa holding the mug who shook my hand.

CLASSICAL REALISM WORKSHOP: VALUE STUDY

Here's from the first class on Values. A side by side of my professor's work and mine. She blocked in the basic head shape for us. The eyes, nose and mouth were just horizontal lines. We had three hours to accomplish it. It was a new workflow and technique to follow so I took my time to make sure I was learning what I needed to learn. I finished the rest of it at home and took liberties at some lighting variations that weren't in the original portrait. Still could use more work but this will have to do for now.

VPL

The Vancouver Library is nothing short of outstanding. It looks like a library but feels like a museum. It is a living, breathing institution and houses almost any kind of resource on any topic you could imagine, updating their information every day. I took this picture not knowing that they use a similar picture and angle on their website. The library was also used in the TV series Fringe as the "Fringe Division Headquarters".

GIRRFOPOTAMUS

Scientists have just discovered this animal that diverged in evolution. The Girrfopotamus. It is a semi-aquatic sociable creature. It's excellent eyesight helps it locate it's favorite food, low hanging Acacia leaves (when standing upright) or it's second best, Savannah grass (when lying down). It's barrel-like body secretes oil that prevents it's delicate skin from sun-burn and where it can't reach to scratch or clean, it's buddy bird the red-billed Oxpecker is there to lend a helping beak...(Actually, my nephew Thijs asked me to draw him some animals and I asked him to name two.)
